is to change ideas about what anything is for.

Second Annual Summer Institute for
K-12 and Community-Based Educators
July 28-31,2008

Tradition bearer Dave Ullin demonstrates woodworking skills.
What are the possibilities for teaching and learning about food and farming
in elementary and secondary education?
Sessions and Activities included:
- Learning about the practice of sustainable farming and agrarian ideals at Suyematsu/Bentryn Farms. We will get our hands and feet in the soil with farm work,
led by Gerard Bentryn, of Bainbridge Island Vineyards, and Betsey Wittick, of Laughing Crow Farm, and explore the possibilities of developing your own farming project
with Day Road farms and/or gardening projects at your school.
- Dave Ullin, woodworker and tradition bearer, talked about purposeful work, experiential education, and forest to classroom projects. He will lead us
through hands-on traditional woodworking projects you can organize for your students on Day Road Farms and at your school.
- We shopped for local food for lunch at Town and Country Market.
- Through readings, documentaries, and living resources, we explored history, heritage, and cultural diversity of farming on Bainbridge Island.
- Participants received a comprehensive resource handbook to complement these sessions and the larger themes of the institute.
"Excellent opportunity to learn and network around these issues."
"Very rich sharing of resources and collaboration."
"Some great connections were made."
"Thanks for the inspiration!"
