A Summer Camp for Local Youth

This pilot summer camp was part of the EduCulture Project on Bainbridge Island, which is working to bridge scholarship, stewardship, and citizenship, through local farm-school programs. Over the last two years we have been developing lived learning experiences for local classrooms on the Suyematsu-Bentryn Farms. This program was produced is collaboration with Laughing Crow Farm, Bainbridge Island Vineyards, Trust for Working Landscapes, and others.
Who: 8-13 years olds (campers will be divided into smaller groups by age)
When: 9:30 – 3:00, Monday – Friday, July 13th – 17th
Where: Set among the working landscapes of historic Suyematsu-Bentryn Farms, 8989 Day Rd. East, Bainbridge Island
Activities included:
• Hands on experience with the day-to-day activities of a working farm
• Sampling locally grown produce and making simple foods
• Exploring farm ecology, sustainable practices, local heritage, and habitat conservation
• Tilling soil, threshing grain, and feeding chickens
• Harvesting and preparing for Bainbridge Saturday Farmer’s Market
• Learning, playing games and having fun while exploring working farms

Camp Staff: EduCulture Project Instructors Heidi Urish and Sarah Ullman were honored to facilitate this experiential farm camp and look forward to next year. Heidi is completing her MA.Ed. at Antioch University Seattle. Sarah Ullman received her M.Ed. from the University of Washington. Together, they bring 17 years of combined experience working with youth in a variety of outdoor classrooms. Campers will also be working with Day Road Farmers, like Betsey Wittick of Laughing Crow Farm.
