The food we eat is the landscape we create.
- Gerard Bentryn, Bainbridge Island Vineyards

This week long intensive professional learning experience will take place amidst the natural beauty and agricultural richness of one of the oldest, most continuously farmed, working landscapes in our region, which is being transformed into a center of learning of K-12 and community based education.  The institute is aimed at supporting educators in building their professional repertoire around cornucopia of food and farm related subject areas. Grounded in place-based education and framed around a curriculum for our bioregion, we explore the possibilities for enriching teaching and learning and bridging classroom and community. We are creating pathways for practicing education for sustainability and building stronger relationships between farms, classrooms, and lunchrooms.   It has been a wonderful opportunity to practice the integration of scholarship, stewardship, citizenship, and sustainability. This is a great opportunity to be professionally fed and feed others!

  • An in-depth exploration of authentic, meaningful and comprehensive ways to bridge classroom and communities with your teaching and learning.
  • A lived experience to inform and cultivate a more lived curriculum.
  • Deepens your professional repertoire and connect to people, places, projects and possibilities that enrich and enliven your teaching about issues that we, as educators, already feel responsible for in our curriculum.
  • Experience the sustainable farming and agrarian ideals practiced at Day Road Farms.
  • Explore the possibilities of developing your own project with a local farm or starting a school garden.
  • Learn about local food.
  • Explore the multicultural heritage of farming on Bainbridge Island.
  • Hands-on farming activities and demonstrations
  • Featured practitioners involved in regional sustainable agriculture and local food movements
  • Evening events for participants and the wider community, from film screenings to guest speakers
  • Spend time with our ever expanding collection of curricular resources and models for bringing farming and food to life for K-12 education.
  • and there is more in the works!

Here is what participants had to say about last year's summer institute experience:

The program was thoughtfully designed and I felt we were pushed to consider a lot of aspects farming /agriculture and education… It was an amazing experience.  I felt it was a very worthwhile institute and it fed my soul as well as my educational interests…Just getting my hands in the dirt and being on my knees was a powerful experience. – High School Teacher

I’d have to say the personalities of the Day Road Farmers and historical Bainbridge Islanders were a highlight for me. I also found it very valuable to be at the institute with others from our school to see how they plan to use the farm.  Being a primary teacher, the “hands-on” experience solidifies the learning for me.  I came up with so many ideas during that quiet time we spent walking around on our own. – Elementary School Teacher
