Memoirs of a Mountaineer
By F. Spencer Chapman. A later, combined edition of the previously published Helvellyn to Himalaya and Lhasa: The Holy City. The first book tells of the author's 1936 mountaineering adventure climbing Chomolhari. The later book describes the author's side journey to Lhasa in 1937. The rich details about his Tibetan experiences and the magnificent sites encountered during his trip have been cited in a number of later books on Tibet.

Nowhere Else in the World
By Gordon Enders. A young American, son of a teacher, who grew up along the India-Tibet border at the turn of the century recounts his adventuresome childhood in the shadow of the British incursion in Tibet. He eventually establishes a close relationship with the Panchen Lama, becoming an advisor to the second holiest monk in Tibet. With sixty-four b &w photos.

Out Of This World: Across the Himalayas to Forbidden Tibet
By Lowell Thomas, Jr. Lowell Thomas and his son were invited to Tibet in 1949 by the Tibetan government with the hope that the international reporter would help broadcast the feared Chinese communist invasion and help Tibet gain assistance from the US government. Under the auspices of The Dalai Lama's authority, the Thomas's were given an opportunity to travel in Tibet in a fashion only a handful of westerners have ever experienced, and would be some of the last foreigners to visit Tibet before the Chinese occupation. Thomas, Jr. describes the stages of their journey in great detail, including meetings with Tibetan officials and a young Dalai Lama, and also recounts the travels of other westerners who visited Tibet before them. A highly recommended travelogue for anyone interested in Tibet travel and a glimpse of authentic Tibet before 1950. With b & w and color photos, and a nine-page suggested equipment list.

By Marco Pallis. One of the most widely read books on travel along the Tibetan frontier of its time. During a 1933 climbing expedition along the Ganges-Satlej watershed, Pallis began to study Tibetan Buddhism, returning in 1936 to study with Lamas in Sikkim and Ladakh.
