Teaching
and Learning about
America's Role in the World
(Updated
May 2005)
What
are the challenging, complex, and controversial curricular
topics that we have always wanted to take on in the classroom,
but never felt quite well enough equipped or assured to do?
This series of educational forums offered the opportunity
for elementary and secondary educators to explore the intricacies
of teaching and learning about America's role in the world.
We unpacked and examined our own professional experiences
in light of a disciplined approach that considers what we
teach along side how we teach. This process is designed to
arrive at a curriculum that is educationally authentic and
understood as such by all stakeholders of the school. It can
hold up even in the current times of conflict and crisis.
In each forum, there was lively, engaging professional discourse
in which we, as educators and citizens, informed and inspired
one another. Many thanks to the over 75 educators from all
over WA state who participated in these forums!
Our
first forum was March 11, 2005, hosted at the Annual
WSCSS Social Studies Leadership Retreat, Lake Chelan,
WA
Our
second forum was March 26, 2005, with special guest,
Sarah Ruth Van Gelder, Editor of YES magazine, hosted at the
Common House of Winslow Cohousing, Bainbridge Island,
WA
Our
third forum was April 30, 2005 hosted at the Center
for Urban Horticulture, Seattle, WA
