Out Of
This World: Across the Himalayas to Forbidden Tibet
By Lowell Thomas, Jr. Lowell Thomas and his son were
invited to Tibet in 1949 by the Tibetan government with
the hope that the international reporter would help broadcast
the feared Chinese communist invasion and help Tibet gain
assistance from the US government. Under the auspices of
The Dalai Lama's authority, the Thomas's were given an opportunity
to travel in Tibet in a fashion only a handful of westerners
have ever experienced, and would be some of the last foreigners
to visit Tibet before the Chinese occupation. Thomas, Jr.
describes the stages of their journey in great detail, including
meetings with Tibetan officials and a young Dalai Lama,
and also recounts the travels of other westerners who visited
Tibet before them. A highly recommended travelogue for anyone
interested in Tibet travel and a glimpse of authentic Tibet
before 1950. With b & w and color photos, and a nine-page
suggested equipment list.
