Citizenship in a Global Age:
The Global
Source Educators' Collaborative
The
Global Source Educators' Collaborative is grass-roots project
dedicated to building a professional learning community among
educators engaged in teaching and learning about important
issues facing humanity and the planet. The
Collaborative was created in 2005 in response to a clear need
among a group of engaged educators for ongoing professional
discourse. The Collaborative is made up of elementary, secondary,
and university educators practicing in the Puget Sound area.
We come together to address issues in global education, to
support one another's curriculum and teaching, and to strengthen
our professional relationships. The energy and commitment
of the Collaborative have become a dynamic element in informing
the work of Global Source.
The
Collaborative's working theme has been:
Citizenship in a Global Age:
Teaching and
Learning about the Role of Democracy, Human Rights and Media in the 21st
Century
Our
activities around this theme have taken form in an on-going
dialogue and study directed at building classroom and school-level
education for citizenship in a global age.

Global
Source's Annual Summer Retreat,
Citizenship in a Global Age: A Pacific Northwest Perspective
Summer is a time for educators to reflect on the year behind
them, refresh oneself, and find inspiration for the year ahead.
This summer event was designed to offer all of that to members
of our professional learning community, including our Educators'
Collaborative. Participants had the opportunity for
engaged discourse and strengthening relationships among fellow
educators, scholars, and other voices in the field. Click here for more information.

Citizenship in a Global Age: Teaching and Learning about
Democracy in the 21st Century
In conjunction with the WSCSS
Annual Social Studies Leadership Retreat, Lake Chelan, WA
The Global Source Educators' Collaborative facilitated
a lively critical dialogue and working session on teaching
and learning about democracy. What does democracy mean
to you as an educator? How do you teach about democracy, at
home and/or in the world? We explored pathways for
raising awareness, building knowledge and fostering engagement
around this vital topic of study. This was an opportunity to
feed ourselves and to feed each other in a supportive environment
of professional learning. Educators brought a compelling story, lesson
plan, or curricular idea on teaching about democracy, along
with any related resources, that they wanted to share with the
group. (This was a three hour session.) We are grateful
to WSCSS for its support of the Collaborative, which has involved
hosting several of our professional learning activities.
The Educators' Collaborative thanks the Washington State Council for the Social Studies for their support and for providing the Collaborative an on-going venue for host our programs.
