When we
are concerned with fairness, justice, diversity, safety, caring,
respect, and responsibility in our teaching and learning,
we are dealing with issues of human rights. "Rights"
have become the fourth "R" in a growing number of
K-12 classrooms and schools. What about yours?
Join us
for a lively day of professional learning about how human
rights education can strengthen what all teachers already
feel responsible for in their curriculum and schools. In the
morning, we will look at the place of human rights education
in curriculum and school life. After lunch, we will examine
human rights issues in our local and global communities, featuring
experts and practitioners from our region.
This prorgam
is for elementary and secondary educators, regardless of their
experience with human rights education, who want to build
stronger local and global bridges between their classroom
and community. There will be plenty of opportunity for dialogue,
resource gathering, and networking with fellow educators.
Opening
Remarks from Dr. Lynn Rasmussen, Principal, Breidablik Elementary
School and Dr. Gene Medina, Superintendent of North Kitsap
School District
Morning Sessions, 9am-Noon
Human Rights Stories from
Across the Curriculum
We will share and discuss personal and professional human
rights stories that model curricular pathways for raising
awareness, building knowledge and foster engagement through
our curriculum.
Human
Rights Stories from Our Schools
We will begin with an activity called "Taking the Human
Rights Temperature of Your School". This will be followed
by a panel of local teachers and administrators discussing
human rights education in their schools. They will help
us connect human rights education to standards and offer
strategies for creating a culture of human rights in our
school communities.
