Global Source Educators' Collaborative

The Global Source Educators' Collaborative was created in 2005 in response to a clear need among a group of engaged educators for ongoing professional discourse. The Collaborative is made up of elementary, secondary, and university educators practicing in the Puget Sound area. We come together to address issues in global education, to support one another's curriculum and teaching, and to strengthen our professional relationships. The energy and commitment of the Collaborative have become a dynamic element in informing the work of Global Source.

The Educators' Collaborative meets monthly, alternating between Bainbridge Island and Seattle. Additional activities planned by the Collaborative include professional enrichment programs, guest speaker forums, curriculum development projects, and events for the larger professional community. The Collaborative's working theme for 2005-6 is Citizenship in a Global Age: Teaching and Learning about the Role of Democracy, Human Rights and Media in the 21st Century. This forum is part of a year-long dialogue and study directed at building classroom and school-level education for citizenship in a global age.

March 10-12: The Collaborative will host a session at the WSCSS Conference in Chelan, WA

Global Source is pleased to announce that we will offer master's degree coursework through Antioch University Seattle in such core topics of global education as Bridging Classes and Communities Globally and Locally; Human Rights Education; Globalization Across Boundaries; and Immigrants, Refugees, and Cultural Survival. Our offerings are designed to meet the elective credit requirements of Antioch's Master of Arts in Education degree. Students may enroll for one offering or take several to form a concentration area of study. Offerings take various forms as well: courses, guided studies, and independent students. They are open to students enrolled in the MAEd program and to non-matriculated students as well. Please contact Jon Garfunkel at Global Source Education (206.780.5797 or Garfunkel@GlobalSourceNetwork.org or Ed Mikel, Center for Programs in Education at Antioch University Seattle (206.268.4617 or emikel@antiochseattle.edu).

The Antioch site-based MAEd program is scheduled to begin a cohort in the Poulsbo area in April, 2006. The graduate program offers a full-time cohort model of degree study for experienced educators comprised of 48 credits that can be completed in five quarters. Of the total of 48 credits required, 25 are to be completed in core courses done by the cohort together. The remaining 23 credits are done through elective offerings, including program-related graduate level courses that may be taken through other universities with instructor approval. Students have great flexibility within the program to specialize in specific professional interests. The curriculum is focused on K-12 learning. The program is organized on a philosophy emphasizing active and engaged learning within a supportive learning community created by and for students and teachers. The individuality of all students and the social and cultural diversity of the group of learners is fully recognized and kept at the center of all activities. Students are encouraged and guided to develop leadership skills enabling them to strive for positive educational change in their classrooms, schools, district, and the larger profession that will promote authentic education, equity, and social justice.
