Program
Overview:
People often refer to our Pacific Northwest bioregion as Salmon Nation. Salmon are an integral part of our ecology, culture, heritage, economy, and politics. But what about our K-12 curriculum? The plight of the salmon reflects the convergence of many critical ecological issues facing our region, and provide topics of study rich in ways to bridge classroom and community.
What are the interdisciplinary possibilities for teaching and learning about salmon in elementary and secondary education?
Join us for a special fall walk in the rhododendron preserve surrounding Chico Creek, in the heart of Kitsap County. Experience the return migration and spawning of salmon in their natural habitat, and see the second largest Douglas Fir tree in the state of Washington. After our outdoor tour of Chico Creek, we will head inside the Mountaineers' Cabin and sit down in front of a warm fire to engage in a professional dialogue about the salmon, conservation and education.
- Enjoy a late fall walk in a spectacular natural salmon habitat.
- Explore how a lived experience with a natural salmon habitat can inform a more lived curriculum about salmon, locally and globally.
- Share stories about the place of salmon education in your teaching practice.
- Find out how other teachers are approaching salmon education in elementary and secondary classrooms.
- Learn about the Salmon Safari Program and the Chico Creek Project.
- Expand professional networks and community relationships.
